Frequently Asked Questions ...
Q: When are your services?
A: You may join us for worship at the following times:
Sunday 9:15 am - First Worship Service
Sunday 11:oo am - Second Worship Service
Sunday 6:00 pm - Evening Service
Wednesday 7:00 pm - Prayer Meeting / Youth / TeamKid / Choir
Q:
What are your services like?
A: Our services have a definite family atmosphere – happy people of all ages singing and worshipping together. Attendance in each of our services is between 150 and 200 people, so you won’t feel like everyone is watching you, but neither will you feel lost in a crowd. What you will notice is that people are friendly and caring. We enjoy each other’s company, and we enjoy all kinds of music together: from hymns to choruses, from reflective to celebrative, from country gospel to a more contemporary sound. Our preaching is Bible-centered and expositional, with an intentional desire to obey God’s Word and apply it to everyday life. Each worship service is identical, lasting about 75 minutes. We have an adult choir, a praise ensemble, and a large variety of instruments and special music. The sermon lasts from 30 to 45 minutes, and we always have a time of response at the end.
Q:
Do I
have to dress up to attend?
A: Though the majority of people dress up somewhat to attend church, we definitely don’t have a dress code. The majority of men do not wear a tie (just in case you were wondering). We want you to come and worship with us, so please don’t let this hold you back from coming.
Q:
Do you use a particular Bible
translation?
A: Our pastors preach using the New American Standard Bible (1995 update) because it is easy to understand and is a very accurate translation for Bible study. Many of our church family bring other versions to church because they find that it helps them understand the Bible even better when they can compare two different translations together.
Q:
Do you embarrass visitors,
like make them stand up in the service?
A: No we don’t. We do give our visitors a little loaf of homemade bread as a welcome gift.
Q:
What is your new building
going to be used for?
A: Our church has been growing, and we need more space for preschool, children, and youth ministries. Our new building will house an expanded preschool area, designed with safety and function in mind. In addition, there will be a large fellowship room which can be divided into three smaller classrooms. Our children and youth will use this area for activities, and our college age class will meet in there on Sunday mornings (currently that class meets at the Fraternal Order of Police building in Xenia because we do not have a classroom large enough to hold them all!). The Christian Karate Club will use that large room facility, as will our Young at Heart group (senior adults) for their monthly dinner/concerts.
Q:
How does the church support
missions?
A: In cooperation with the Southern Baptist Convention we actively support local, national, and international missionaries with financial and prayer support. Giving for missions is channeled through the Southern Baptist cooperative program which then disburses funds to local, national, and international missionaries to cover the cost of living and fund ministry endeavors. Special offerings are taken throughout the year of which 100% goes directly to the missionaries on the field to meet needs which they have. At Christmas the Lottie Moon offering is collected to support international missionaries and their ministries. At Easter the Annie Armstrong offering is collected for North American missionaries and outreach efforts. And in September the Ray Roberts offering is collected for missions and church planting in Ohio and the Dayton area. In 2007, Dayton Avenue will give about $70,000 toward missions (about 20% of our budget).
Q:
Is your church involved in
the community?
A: Yes! Our church is committed to actively supporting the community in which we serve as a way of demonstrating the love of Jesus Christ. Girl Scouts, home schooling groups, karate classes, social work seminars, and other groups periodically use our facilities in order to enrich and develop the community in which we live. We also periodically have outreaches into the community such as providing a meal for Xenia’s high school football team, distributing batteries for smoke detectors to area homes, and helping the needy in our community.
Q:
How do I become a member at
your church?
A: We have a three week informational class on Sunday mornings designed to help you learn more about our church and the responsibilities of membership. Requirements for membership include placing your trust in Jesus Christ for forgiveness of sins and baptism as a believer in Jesus Christ. We welcome all to join our fellowship who meet these requirements and are willing to submit themselves to the doctrinal parameters held by the church as outlined in the “What we believe” section.
Q:
How are church decisions made
at Dayton Avenue?
A: Our church is governed by the members of the congregation and thus the decisions are made by the consensus of the congregation. Various committees are appointed to make decisions in key areas such as youth, children, personnel, finances, and building and grounds. Each committee is made up of church members and is given the freedom to make decisions within certain parameters. A business meeting is held on the first Wednesday of every month where church members discuss and vote on church decisions.
Q:
Do you have deacons?
What do they do?
A: We currently have 8 deacons who are responsible for serving the needs of the church family. Deacons are not a decision-making body or an executive committee; they are a group of servant-leaders caring for the spiritual and physical needs of the church. Those who are elected to serve are ordained by the church family to the office of deacon and thus commissioned to serve faithfully and in a manner consistent with their calling. Those who are willing to serve alongside of deacons may serve as yokefellows who help share in the responsibilities of service by partnering with an ordained deacon.
Q:
How can I get involved at
Dayton Avenue?
A: There are a wide variety of ministries in which you can serve spanning from preschool and children’s ministry to music and prayer ministries. We believe that each believer is given gifts to use for the encouragement and edification of the church family and thus we encourage each one to find a place to serve. If you have questions about where you might serve please contact Pastor Jon or Pastor Tim.
